I Don’t Notice the Palm Trees Anymore
The past couple of days…
Nikki and I have been gallivanting around the area.
We aren’t doing anything in particular, just spending Mom-n-Daughter time together before I leave in just over a week.
Sometimes the simplest adventure gets me thinking the most…
I’ve spent winters here since 2015, visiting Nikki and exploring many of the bigger areas. But there’s still a lot of nooks and crannies to explore in Miami-Dade county.
Today, we simply take a detour and drive thru random side streets.
As I drive, we comment on the scenery and talk about the first time we came to sunny south Florida.

I remember being in awe with all the palm trees lining the roadsides, perfectly planted in people’s yards, and, well, everywhere.
I couldn’t get over how fluffy the south Florida clouds looked… so much fluffier than the northwest Illinois clouds I roamed beneath the first 50ish years of my life.
As we reminisce about our first trip here, little raindrops begin to appear on the windshield… even though the sky is blue and the sun is shining bright.
Rain while the sun shines?!?… just another Florida oddity.
Over the years, these things became normal…
Palm trees, fluffy Florida clouds, and sunshiny raindrops don’t give that fuzzy, awe-inspired feeling anymore. They lost their newness… as if just another dusty trinket sitting on a shelf.
Funny how that works.
I wonder how to get that newness feeling back. Is it even possible?!? 🤷♀️
After a couple of deep breaths, I try to see the rest of today’s mini-adventure from a fresh perspective. It’s not quite the same as the first time… but it’s a step in the right direction.
Parting thoughts…
Today was a simple, fun, unplanned day with Nikki. The only reason we went anywhere is because she left her keys in my van yesterday. Taking her keys back to her was all the excuse we needed to go roaming around together… after a quick stop at the local coffee shop, of course.
I can’t believe I’m down to my last week here. The time went by fast this year… probably because I shook things up (at the very last minute) and went to an extended stay hotel instead of my usual campground.
In all honesty, the change of pace was a good thing!
Until the next little piece of the story rolls around,
Connie 🌼
